The WiFi transfer plugin and standalone app, which does not require Total Commander, offers a convenient solution for transferring data locally between Android devices without relying on cloud services. This plugin/tool supports direct connections via HTTP over WiFi/WLAN, allowing for seamless file transfer between two Android devices or between Android (Server) and any device or computer with a web browser or WebDAV client.
Upon installation, the app creates a local Web+WebDAV server, providing users with a server URL that can be scanned as a QR-Code or entered manually. It should be noted that while this app does not contain any ads, it does include a link to Total Commander in the upper right corner when accessed via a web browser, which is treated as an ad by the Play Store.
In addition to its intended use as a plugin for Total Commander, the app can also function independently. Users can simply select files, text, or URLs in any file manager and utilize the "share" function to send them to the WiFi plugin. This action triggers the creation of a server and displays the respective URL and QR-Code.
One noteworthy feature is that all data transfers occur within the user's wireless LAN network, guaranteeing privacy and eliminating the need to rely on external servers.
It is important to ensure both devices are connected to the same WiFi network for seamless data transfer. In instances where the sender is not part of a WiFi network, this tool offers the option to create its own access point or initiate a WiFi direct connection. Other devices can then connect to this network to facilitate data transfer. Additionally, users can establish automatic connections by scanning the QR-Code from a copy of the WiFi plugin.
Unfortunately, starting from Android 10, certain permissions are required to create a WiFi direct server. The app will prompt users for the "Location" permission when attempting to initiate a WiFi direct server. However, this permission is not necessary for normal operation when both client and server are on the same network.
For added security, version 3.4 introduces the option to use a fixed path with user name/password login instead of a random path. This login method employs DIGEST authentication, ensuring that passwords are never sent in clear text over the connection. This feature is recommended for regular connections to the same device, such as when mounting the device as a drive in Windows or MacOS.
